SMEs agriculture should seize the opportunities of space technologies: what are the barriers and how can we overcome them? An appropriate business environment should allow the creation of a fair EU market: how can we facilitate the aggregation of demand, which is an essential mean of reducing the cost of services? How can these space technologies integrate digitalization and innovation for a sustainable and competitive agriculture sector? Let me add few more comments on this topic. The market is potentially very big, but in fact it remains, as of today, at an embryonic stage. At the moment, these technologies are often used by large companies, but are virtually unknown to SMES. How can this potential be untapped? Is awareness of these tools among farmers sufficient? How could we make these technologies affordable for SMEs? One could detect new ways to address the governance and infrastructure aspects (IACS system, Integrated Administrative Control System) towards the downstream domain, allowing EU companies and institutions to introduce new cost effective methodologies. A wider use of the DG AGRI’s existing guidelines (i.e. the ongoing Check by Monitoring CbM through Copernicus satellite constellation), alongside different local solutions (airborne, drones, in situ devices, etc.), could allow to obtain both measurable environmental indicators on climate change and usher a new era for widespread precision farming in Europe.
