The coordinates provided by Text Removed - Reporting Tools and Text Removed
- Reporting Tools, even if different, show that the migrants were intercepted in
the territory of Lithuania. However, the incident has been categorized as
“Prevention of Illegal Border Crossing from Belarus”. This event could be
qualified as a potential violation of EU or international law, in particular related
to Fundamental Rights and international protection obligations.

Following the launch of the rapid border intervention, the Republic of Lithuania
has per protocol of the Government’s session of 2 August 2021 and decision of
the Minister of Interior, introduced a new border management procedure.

The paragraph 3 of the said decision reads as follows:

“3, Persons who have crossed the State border in places other than those
referred to in point 1 and who are in the border area and who seek asylum in the
Republic of Lithuania shall not be admitted to the territory of the country and
shall be directed (required to proceed) from the territory of the country to the
nearest international border crossing point or diplomatic mission of the Republic
of Lithuania.”
