Reluctant to give any informe.tion when first interro,~ated (not at this Center), source now claims to have been authorized by the rector of the school to disclose the details of his research work to the Allies. He was cooperative during interrogation and is ready to collaborate with the Allies. Rating: B-2 ~of ,Infy,~at~Q.£: Spring L~5 Int.errogator: A.z. I. INTRODUOTIOI,i ···In Sept ;9 the PEENEMUENDE Experimental Center ordered several scientists of the' Technical Institute of DARMSTADT to meet at PEWEMUENDE. During the meet- ing these scientists. were informed of the intended large-scale experiments with· rocket-propelled missiles. Each was given specific assignments for developing various parts of the experimental projectiles. Source ~as assigned the following: a)' A device maintaining a constant frequency of 500. cycles in a 27-vol t current - of secondary importance. to the V-2, according to source. b) The automatic V-2 range-control unit (See III, below). c) Later, source had the task of developing measuring instruments for the HEIDEL- B"SRG cyclotrons~ II. !=.?. EXPERIME:r--r!.§_ AT PEENEMU~lWE The father of V-2, source sta+,cs, was Prof VON BRAUN, an engineer of little importance .before the war who had carried out some rocket experiments in the post - World War years together with OPEL Jr. When he proposed his V-2 ideas to the German General Staff in 1939, he was put in charge of the PZENEMUENDE laboratories • .Or STEINHOFF, only recently given tho title of professor, and describad by source·· as being exceptionally able, was o..ssignod to work on the oxpariments ..as a special- ist in electrical matters. " The research on V-2 proceeded very slowly at first. In spring 43, ho"wever, orders· to speed up the exporiments .arrived. Most of the component parts of V-2 were built and td.ed at PE.ZNEMUE!IDE; only a few devices were given t·o scientists for development outside the Sxperimental Genter. These wore given to the DARM- STADT Technical School professors for thG most part, because Prof Dr STEINHOF was a former student at that School. Source successfully completed the automatic range-control devices for tho V-2 by the end of 43,' but ho was still trying to improve it, as well as finding er- satz materials for some of its parts. Gon DORNBERGER, Knights 1 Cross holder, was CG of tho PEENEMUENDE Experimental Center. :II. A~TOMA'l'IO ~-CONTROL ~~ FOR .Y:@. The only way to increase the range accuracy of the mie- ; · sHc is, -therefore, to cut off the fuel combustion NOT at a time set in advance, but only after the missile attains a definite velocity, calculated in advance. Thie, in turn, can be deduced through the well-known integration formula by con- si~eri,ng ~he ac.o.el~ration at the moment of oaoh explosion, i.e., at the instapt of' each. f'.orwa:rd thrust of tho missile. · '' a) Principlos Involved In source's device, tho thrust of the missilo at the instant of tho explosion is transformed into a direct current, which is proportional to this forward· thrust This current is directed through an electrolytic condenser previously charged with a capacity calculated to corrospond to tho velocity of the missile at· which the fuol combustion is to bo stopped. Duri11g tho flight of the missile, the gen- orated current builds up a char go equalizing that of the condenser. As so.on as tho charge thus built up reaches tho proportion of tho condonsor charge the re- sul'ting rupture of voltage oporatoe a mochanical dovico which stops the fuo_l coin .. bustiort. · · b) Operation (~ §..chomatic. P-,i~gr~, !ppondix) A rotating coil B is placod in th0 magnetic fiold A· In front of' tho coil, and placed ocoontrioally with it, is a copper plate O, which, in turn, is placed in tho contor of tho field originated by two coils, D 1 and D 1 t, through which passes an induction current of 500 cycloe. ,. When. the miseilo is givon a forward thrust at the instant of' oaeh explosion, tho mass of' tho copper plate 0 tends to move. By doing so, tho plate dieturbe .tho co~.s.tant magnetic fiold croatod by tho coil~ D1 and D' 1 • The current created in tho coils 't) 1 and D' 1 originatos in ·tho secondary of tho transformer E an al- ternating. curr.on~ which is applied to th~ grid of tubo R'. Thie current flows through t~o transformer F into tho copper oxide rectifier G, and from horo, as (pulsating) D.O, it charges special oloctrolytic condoneor H and flows back to tho rotating coil B. Hero it croe.tos a rupture of voltage which nullifies tho original, effect of the :f'orwe.rd thrust of tho missile on thG copper plate o. " As tho ourront flowing through tho Valvo H booomos equal to tho pro- det·orminod ohargo stored thorc, a dischargo of voltage occurs, which ie improssod on tho grid of ·tubo R11 • . 1 · A relay J, placod in tho plate circuit of tubo R 1 , is operated by this grid roaotion and, in turn, oporatoe the mechanical device which stops tho fuel com- bustio.n. . In ordor to charge tho oloctrolytic condonsor H, source developed ~n inetru~ mont (KONTAKTUHR) which operated on a 50 ... oyclo curront.
