What is MIREU?

MIREU aims to establish a network of mining and metallurgy regions
across Europe.

Our objectives are to identify ways to ensure the sustained and sustainable
supply of mineral raw materials to the EU and to promote investment,
innovation and growth in the sector

Our Mission

We aim to identify the economic, societal, environmental and technical
factors that are either conducive or constrain the development of mining
and metallurgy industries in Europe.

MIREU will also facilitate an exchange between all interested stakeholders
in and between the regions, such as regulatory authorities, political and
administrative bodies, development agencies, mining companies, non-
government organisations, as well as the public.

Deliverables

The outcomes from the project will be gathered in an online MIREU

Knowledge Portal, that will be freely accessible during the lifetime of the
project.

To further guarantee the continuation of the network, a Council of Mining

and Metallurgy European Regions (CoMMER) will be established at the
end of the project

MIREU was initiated by the Regional Council of

Lapland (RCL) about 3 years ago after discussions with

DG GROW,

Concerns were:

°e Alack ofreal cooperation between mining &
metallurgy regions

° Europe and global decline in public acceptance of

raw material extraction How did

e Lack of awareness of the importance of mineral
raw materials in people’s lives IT get
°e Socio-economic changes in mining and metallurgy
regions -> losing economic power and inhabitants here?

communities

° Creating a network of direct contacts with the
people from regions and municipalities

While MIREU is an EU focused project it does
recognise that mining and metallurgy are global
industries with significant international interaction

We understand that many of the challenges we face
in Europe are common globally, including Canada

Our objective is for a sustainable, responsible
industry and believe that global cooperation and
knowledge sharing is beneficial to all
