Examples of digitalization in IOM • Border management: IOM priority to support governments with solutions for integrated border management and ID management. ➢ IOM recommends to the German EU Presidency to prioritize digitalization transition of migration management and legal ID management to enhance access to public services for all • Migrant Protection & Assistance: IOM has the largest global databases on missing migrants, human trafficking cases, assisted voluntary return, longitudinal data on outcomes for reintegration support • Accurate and reliable information to promote safe, orderly and dignified migration: IOM developed a mobile phone application, MigApp, to help migrants make informed decisions about migration • Knowledge management & communication: The Global Migration Data Portal and GMDAC’s work in leading the UN Migration Network’s Core Group to develop the Knowledge Platform & Connection Hub – feature of Migration 4.0 Discussion Forum • Harnessing the potential of new data sources on migration: Big Data for Migration Alliance & the Data Innovation Directory

A fast-evolving migration data landscape • Data innovation in migration rising in importance – even pre-COVID-19 • ‘Big’ and ‘small’ data are not in competition: we need both • During (public health and other) emergencies: - timely statistics are critical to respond quickly and effectively - collecting data from traditional sources can be difficult • Meanwhile big data are already there yet largely untapped → Need for ethically responsible and privacy-safeguarding collaboration frameworks
