Deep apologies for the oversight. Below, please find the LTT we used. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy. Once again, criminal gangs, putting profits above life, crammed desperate people onto an unseaworthy boat in terrible weather conditions and pushed them out into the sea. One of our airplanes performing surveillance in the area spotted a grey rubber boat with dozens of people adrift offthe Libyan coast on Wednesday afternoon. The plane immediately alerted national rescue centres in Italy, Malta and Libya, as required by international law. Because of the critical situation and deteriorating weather, the crew of our plane also issued several distress calls over the emergency marine radio channel to alert all ships nearby. Several merchant vessels in the area proceeded to render assistance. Because of the worsening weather conditions, and the fact that the plane was running out of fuel, it had to return to base late at night. The morning after, another search and rescue flight was organised. Unfortunately, it only spotted a deflated rubber boat and one dead body in the water.

The following is a brief outline of the events as related to the Frontex participation in the SAR. Wednesday, 22 April °e At 17:15 Frontex plane OSPREY 1 took off from Lampedusa to comply with a request from the Italian national rescue centre (MRCC) regarding three possible boats in distress in the Libyan Search and Rescue zone. °e At 18:36 OSPREY 1 spotted a grey rubber boat adrift with about 80 persons on board, Frontex informed the Libyan, Italian and Maltese Rescue Coordination Centres. °e At 19:14 OSPREY 1 broadcast a distress communication over the marine radio emergency channel (MAYDAY RELAY); OSPREY 1 then contacted Air Traffic Control Tripoli to pass all the information related to the event to Tripoli Rescue Coordination Centre. °e At 19:35 Frontex tried to contact Tripoli Rescue Coordination Centre twice over the phone with no success. e _ At 20:00 Frontex updated Libyan, Italian and Maltese Rescue Coordination Centres about the rubber boat in distress. e At 20:23 OSPREY 1 again broadcast the distress call (MAYDAY RELAY) over the marine radio emergency channel as well as to Tripoli Air Traffic Control. e At 20:52 OSPREY 1 started to return to Lampedusa because it was running out of fuel.

There have been diverging press records on last week’s incidence with about 130 persons dying and of course, as usually, also the commission gets a lot of questions on this. I understand that the more factual press reports were fed by your LTT on the events. Could you share this line with us so that we are sure we all sing from the same song sheet? And it would be great if this could be done in future from your side spontaneously in case of major incidents that are likely to attract significant media attention — that would save us a lot back and forth and time (and would give a good image of both Frontex and the COM to the outside in our view).
