Vor drei Jahren hatte die Grenzagentur Frontex eine Langstreckendrohne "Hermes 900" zur Grenzüberwachung eingesetzt. Die Drohne war dazu auf Kreta stationiert, die Flüge erfolgten unter Verantwortung der EU-Agentur für die Sicherheit des Seeverkehrs (EMSA). Anfang Januar 2019 ist das Luftfahrzeug auf der Startbahn des Flughafens Tympaki bei der Landung verunfallt.
Laut der EU-Kommission (Antwort von Adina Vălean im Namen der Europäischen Kommission vom 25. Juni 2020,
E-000567/2020) habe es sich nicht um einen Absturz, sondern um eine „harte Landung“ gehandelt, nachdem Sensoren der Drohne zuvor „atypische Messwerte“ angezeigt hätten. Demnach wurden der Rumpf, Tragflächen und Sensoren beschädigt, es sei aber „weder zu Todesfällen noch zu Schäden an der Landebahn“ gekommen.
